Praying (and more) for our sisters and brothers in Christ – from John Wesley’s sermon, “Catholic Spirit”

Notice how prayer involves us more fully and effectively in the lives of sisters and brothers in Christ:

Christians who truly have a catholic spirit keep their sisters and brothers in Christ in their hearts.  They have an indescribable affection for them, yearn for their welfare, ceaselessly entrust them to God in prayer, and intervene with others on their behalf.  They speak encouragingly to them, and in all their words they work to strengthen them in God. To the utmost of their abilities, in everything spiritual and temporal, they help their Christian sisters and brothers.  They are ready “to spend and be spent” for others and even to “lay down their lives” for their sakes.

Wesley first published “Catholic Spirit” in 1750 in volume 3 of his Sermons on Several Occasions.
